Short Biography

Oliver Hämmig studied social and political sciences and economics at the University of Zurich (UZH). After graduation in 1997 he worked and completed his PhD at the Institute of Sociology of the UZH. In 2001 he moved to the Institute of Addiction Research, an associated Institute of the UZH, and subsequently to the Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine at the Medical Faculty of the UZH where he worked for many years as a senior researcher, lecturer and leader of a research group in the fields of social epidemiology and occupational health psychology. During these years he also completed his post-graduate studies in public health at the Universities of Basel, Bern and Zurich and at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, USA, and additionally acquired his postdoctoral lecture qualification (venia legendi) at the Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich. In 2013 he went to Careum R+D in Zurich as head of the research division, before he returned to the UZH and the newly designated Epidemiology, Biostatistcs and Prevention Institute as head of health reporting and monitoring.

His research focuses lie in the work environment (working conditions, job demands and resources, work stress, workplace violence etc.) and the broader social environment (social inequalities and status differences, social relationships including social support, social conflicts, social isolation and loneliness etc.) as two important sources of factors and conditions which influence, predict or determine health and health behaviors or lifestyle – and particularly disease and ill-health and health risk behaviors.
