Division of Chronic Disease Epidemiology

Within the Division of Chronic Disease Epidemiology, we emphasize a general population, life-course view of chronic diseases that pose a great burden for people and society.

Our approach to prevention, treatment, and risk/benefit analysis for diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, lung diseases, and mental illness prioritizes risk factors that are highly-prevalent in the population that have potentially large impacts on disease outcomes – such as physical activity, diet and obesity, substance abuse, and socio-demographic factors.

This strategy, combined with expertise in the measurement of key health indicators such as incidence, prevalence, mortality, quality of life, and health care utilization, gives us strong leverage to promote health and reduce the burden of chronic disease on a large scale.
