ACTIVATE-CF: Effects of a 6-months partially supervised conditioning program in cystic fibrosis

Exercise has become an important component in overall cystic fibrosis (CF) care,
but it is not clear whether a partially supervised exercise training with motivational feedback is able to withhold pulmonary function decline. As CF is a rare disease an international, multi-center study is designed to assess the effects of such a training program on pulmonary function with forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1) as primary endpoint. Secondary endpoints are quality of life, time to and number of exacerbations, exercise-related side effects, physical activity and aerobic fitness, osteoporosis, diabetes control, depression and responsiveness of exercise training with respect to the underlying mutation. If exercise proves beneficial, this program can be integrated as fixed part in the treatment regimen of CF patients worldwide.
