Short Biography
Philipp Kerksieck is a postdoctoral researcher at the Centre of Salutogenesis and the Division of Public and Organizational Health at the Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Prevention Institute (EBPI). He obtained his PhD in 2021 from the Life Science Zurich Graduate School (University of Zurich and ETH Zurich) in the Epidemiology and Biostatistics PhD Program, and in parallel completed the inter-university PhD program of the Swiss School of Public Health (SSPH+).
Philipp subsequently joined the craft4health research project, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation and the Dutch Research Council. In this role, he led the project under the supervision of Prof Georg F. Bauer and Prof Jessica de Bloom and collaborated with international PhD candidates to investigate proactive behaviours and their relevance for employee health and well-being.
He is actively involved in the Digital Society Initiative – Community Work at the University of Zurich, co-leading the community with Prof Karin Schwiter and Prof Lauren Howe. Within this framework, he contributes to a global survey across 35 countries and 18,000 employees on the future of work.
Before coming to Zurich, Philipp studied Social Sciences (Political Science and Sociology) at the University of Mannheim and Psychology at the Albert-Ludwigs-University Freiburg, Germany. He gained extensive experience as a research associate and lecturer at the Albert-Ludwigs-University Freiburg, as well as through lecturer positions at the University of Applied Sciences Freiburg and the University of Education Heidelberg. Philipp is currently teaching at the University of Zurich (Faculty of Science, Faculty of Medicine), and in the Diploma of Advanced Studies (DAS) in Work + Health, a continuing education programme jointly offered by the Universities of Zurich and Lausanne.
Research Focus and Current Projects:
Philipp’s research addresses the promotion of employee health and sustainable working conditions from a salutogenic, resource-oriented, and proactive perspective. His current research efforts particularly focus on needs-based job crafting for supporting employee mental health, as mental health issues have become the leading cause of work disability in Switzerland and many other countries. He is currently exploring how needs-based job crafting can be integrated into job coaching for individuals with mental health conditions, focusing on job retention and return-to-work. In collaboration with a public insurance provider, he is developing, and evaluating a digital, playful intervention toolbox. The project was funded by public foundations in the field of mental health and work participation. Project results and intervention materials are made freely available under open-source and Creative Commons licences.
