Publication: Vitamin D deficiency, skin color and pregnancy

EBPI (Aline Richard, former PhD student at EBPI, and Sabine Rohrmann) and USZ (Katharina Quack-Lötscher) researchers recently published first results on vitamin D status of women early in pregnancy living in the Zurich area. Sixty-three percent of these women were vitamin D deficient (serum 25-hydroxyvitamin concentration < 20 ng/mL). Women with dark skin color were more often vitamin D deficient than women with lighter skin. The results call for more intense counseling to improve vitamin D status during pregnancy, in particular for women with darker skin color.
